India has been growing exceptional coffee for centuries. The world is just starting to pay attention, and Alai is a big reason why. On a mission to de-anonymize Indian coffee by sourcing direct from small-scale experimental producers, Alai shares so many of FUNK's core values, which is why we're proud to release Chura Liya as a special Diwali celebration coffee. Grown by Dr. Aveen and Dr. Yogitha Rodrigues, these S9 cherries are inoculated with wine yeast and sealed into anoxic tanks to ferment whole before three weeks of drying on raised beds. The result is full-bodied stewed strawberry and long pepper. A festival of its own, all in your cup. Happy Diwali.
Grown Slow in the Kudremukh Hills
Chura Liya comes from Melkodige Estate, tucked into the Kudremukh mountain range in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Here, three generations of the Rodrigues family grow slow-maturing Arabica in humus-rich soil, under a canopy of native biodiversity that shelters the whole estate. Dr. Aveen and Dr. Yogitha Rodrigues hand pick only ripe S9 cherries, then inoculate them with wine yeast and seal them whole into anoxic tanks for several days of fermentation. This is coffee grown with patience and processed with intention, a quiet reminder that India has been doing this beautifully for a very long time.FAQ
